THESE DOG DAYS
A resource for disabled dogs and their owners
3/6/2018 24 Comments BUMBLESNOTToday we reflect on the life of The Bumblesnot (aka Bumble) in our interview with Melissa. Many of you will know of Melissa's great work raising awareness and funds for senior and special needs dog adoption through Bumble's popular Instagram account @thebumblesnot.
Melissa adopted the eight year old Bumble from a local shelter in 2011. They spent the next six years together until he passed away in October 2017. During this time she learned a lot about life with a disabled dog as Bumble gradually lost the use of his hind legs, bladder and bowel function as a result of suspected Degenerative Myleopathy. Melissa kindly shares her story with us today. Can you tell us about Bumble's disability?

Meet Gem! Gem is a two year old Husky from Thunder Bay, Canada.
Gem had a difficult start to life suffering abuse before finding a loving home with Erin. Gem's injuries included swelling in her back which hardened and left her paralyzed in the hind legs. Despite being paralysed you can see in the videos on Gem's Instagram that she still has some movement in the hind legs, however, most of the movement is involuntary. Erin was told that Gem would never walk or stand on her own but as usual she has proved the vets wrong. In the summer gem swims every day for 20 minutes and this has greatly improved her movement and strength in her back legs. She also goes to the chiropractor every 2 weeks to keep her body healthy. 2/26/2018 2 Comments DieselToday we meet the super cute Diesel and his family from Port Hope, Canada.
Diesel became paralyzed at age 4 due to a condition called hemivertebrae abnormality. According to his previous owners, who surrendered him for rescue, he woke up one morning seemingly in pain, and couldn’t walk. They brought him to the vet and did attempt two surgeries to bring back his mobility, but when they surgeries didn’t work they realized they didn’t have the ability to care for him. This landed Diesel confined to his crate almost 24/7 for about 3 months until they contacted a rescue in the Port Hope area, where Ashley and Diesel met. When Ashley took Diesel in she had him seen by the vet, and took him to a specialized rehab centre. When they reviewed Diesel's medical files, they knew that he was too far gone and his chances of recovery were very slim. Regardless, they gave hydrotheraphy and physical rehab exercises a shot to be sure, but with no luck. Diesel is paralyzed in his hind end for life, but don’t tell him that, it doesn’t slow him down one bit! |
